What are the NAECA 2015 Water Heater Regulations?

2015 09-04

Prestige seriesEffective April 16, 2015, the National Appliance Energy Conservation Act (NAECA)—per the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)—will require higher energy efficiencies for almost all residential tank-type gas, electric, oil and tankless gas water heaters manufactured in the U.S.

These higher requirements are based on energy factors (EF), which measure overall water heater efficiency by determining what percentage of the energy delivered to the unit from your power source is used effectively to heat water. The higher the EF, the more efficiently the water heater converts power directly into hot water while reducing energy losses—and the more you save in energy costs.

To find out how this can affect you, download the NAECA Brochure.

Got a question about water heaters?  Here are some frequently asked questions that may help you decide on a new water heater.

1. What is FVIR?
It means Flammable Vapor Ignition Resistant.  An ANSI (American National Standards Institute) standard went into effect in July 2003 that will prevent a water heater from igniting flammable vapors outside the combustion chamber. This helps to protect homes.

2. What is the Heat Pump Water Heater all about?
This water heater uses heat pump technology to achieve a 2.0 efficiency rating. (Residential gas is approximately 0.62; and residential electric is approximately 0.92). The HPWH is also Energy Star Compliant and may provide you with tax savings. The water heater has a 10-year tank leak warranty and a 10-year parts warranty. It also has a first year in-home labor warranty.

3. How can I determine which water heater is right for me?
Choosing a water heater is based on your family size and how much hot water you will use in one continuous hour. We call it Peak Hour Demand.  Your Rheem contractor can help you determine the proper size.  When talking to your contractor, make sure you tell him how many bathrooms you have, how many showers and bathtubs and about peak times you may use a lot of hot water.

4. I need to vent my gas water heater several feet away from an outside wall. Which product is best for me?
There are a couple of products that may work in your application. The Power Direct Vent is a seal combustion, direct vent water heater that may be installed up to 60 feet away from the homes outside wall. We also have a standing pilot Direct Vent that will vent up to 4 feet from the outside wall.

5. Do you make water heaters designed for commercial applications?
Yes we do. We have a full line of standing pilot, intermittent spark, direct vent, sealed combustion and high efficiency commercial water heaters. Our Xtreme models will provide up to 756 gallons of hot water in an hour; and recover the tank contents in as little as 8 minutes! You can select from an electric model or gas model.

6. How can I find a local installer of Rheem Water Heaters?

Take Advantage of The Tax Credit Before Its Too Late

2013 30-07

On Jan. 1, 2013, the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 was extended, which continues tax credits for energy efficiency upgrades to existing homes, including purchases of heating, cooling and water heating equipment made in 2012 and 2013. Here are some frequently asked questions about the tax credits.

What equipment qualifies for the credit?
High-efficiency water heaters, furnaces, boilers, heat pumps, central air conditioners, building insulation, windows, roofs, biomass stoves, and circulating fans used in qualifying gas furnaces. Qualifying Rheem equipment includes:

  • Tankless Gas Water Heater With an efficiency rate of 0.82 or higher – $300
  • High–Efficiency Gas Furnaces with an AFUE of 95 or greater – $150
  • High–Efficiency Central A/C System  that achieves the highest efficiency CEE tier as of January 1, 2009 (16 SEER; 13 EER) – $300
  • Advanced Main Air Circulating Fan – $50

When does the tax credit expire?
This tax credit originally expired at the end of 2011, however the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 retroactively renewed the tax credit effective Jan. 1, 2012. It runs through Dec. 31, 2013, so qualifying equipment must be purchased by the end of this year.

What’s the maximum amount that a homeowner can receive in tax credits?
The maximum amount an eligible homeowner may receive in tax credits for improvements is $500. If you have already claimed credits of $500 or more from improvements made in 2011 or any year prior, you are ineligible to claim new credits for any new improvements made during 2012 or 2013.

Can these tax credits be applied to energy-efficient equipment purchased for a second home?
In order for purchases of high-efficiency heating, cooling and water heating equipment to be eligible for this tax credit, the equipment must be installed in a primary residence that is owned and used by the taxpayer.

What do I need to do to take advantage of this tax credit?
Your local contractor who installs the equipment can help make sure that you have the right documentation needed to claim the tax credit.

For information on installing a new system and taking advantage of this tax credit, contact your local Rheem contractor.

Flood Damaged Water Heaters

2013 22-04

If your water heater has been submerged in water, do not attempt to repair, install, or operate the product. Due to the conductivity of water along with its corrosive properties all the operational controls are rendered unsafe. As for the insulation properties of the product, it would have become saturated with water which cannot be removed resulting in exterior corrosion and failure of the product.

The affected water heater should be removed and replaced with a new unit. As a further note, warranties on our products will not be applied when the product has been damaged, among other things, by flood. Any claims made will be declined if it is determined the cause of failure is the product being damaged as a result of flood.
